In the 20-plus years that I’ve sung with Global Voices I’ve had various roles, including drafting some of our core documents. I think part of our strength as a group is the solid foundation of understanding behind our music-making. I’m a social worker and big on fairness and kindness. It feels good and right to sing music that connects people, places and traditions. As a choir, we’ve sung to honour significant times for members, our families and the wider community. Singing with Global Voices on Wednesday evenings ‘warms my heart and soothes my soul’, as the lyrics go in one of our songs. There are always some laughs and there’s often cake. I’m a gardener, a cook and a traveller who has sung on trains, in caves, up mountains, in the desert, in the kitchen and the street, and in the face of the odd disaster. I’ll readily sing to babies and trees. Some years back I was lucky enough to marry one of the Global Voices tenors.
